Etherial Materials | What Coperni's Air Swipe Bag Tells us About the Future of Fabrication
At Paris Fashion Week, luxury brand Coperni presented an otherworldly and intergalactic runway show and debuted a handbag made of the same material NASA uses to capture stardust 👜✨
I recently had the opportunity to interview Dr Ioannis Michaloudis a visual artist, researcher, and academic who helped create the Air Swipe bag that debuted on the runway at Paris Fashion Week for Coperni.Â
For those who don’t know, Coperni is a French luxury fashion brand known for being avant-garde and experimental with new technologies. One of the brand’s most memorable (and viral) moments was when they spray painted a dress onto Bella Hadid on the runway.Â
One of the designs Coperni is known for is the Swipe bag, inspired by the swipe-to-unlock icon on your phone screen (so you can already start to see the connection between fashion and tech…)
For their fall/winter 2024 collection, Coperni presented an otherworldly and intergalactic runway show, which included the Air Swipe bag, a version of the swipe bag made from the same materials used to capture stardust. The bag is 99% air and 1% silica, yet it is strong enough to hold lava (or more practically, your iPhone).
I spoke with Dr Michaloudis, who has a background in textile design and has worked with companies like NASA, on the experience of collaborating with Coperni and why we should look to space technology for inspiration on how we design materials for the future.Â
