Lina Wassong - 3D Printing the Future of Fashion
In the world of fashion tech, Lina Wassong is a rising star and a woman-to-watch. In addition to recently authoring two books on electronics, the engineer-designer is now mastering the art of 3D printing for fashion.
Perhaps inspired by the likes of Iris Van Herpen and Danit Peleg, Wassong creates garments that leverage leading manufacturing techniques. Her latest creation, The Parallax Dress, was 3D printed on a machine by Formlabs .
A high-tech spin on the little black dress, The Parallax Dress is based on the unique nervous system of an octopus. The octopuses’ control centre extends into all eight arms, allowing the arms to move autonomously, which gives the creature specialized problem-solving abilities.
The fashion tech creation was brought to life in the Studio by ElektroCouture, the leading house creating commercial fashion technologies. While we don't think we'll all be walking around in octopus dresses anytime soon, the concept does make us rethink intelligence in a digital age.

We first met Lina last year at #FashionTech Berlin, a conference exploring the crossover between fashion and tech. There, she was displaying early works such as a skirt that mimics a jellyfish, and a dress that listens and reacts to its environment (scroll down for photos).

One of Wassong's earlier works, the Jellyfish skirt, was created using 42 multicoloured lights and fiber optic strands. It's meant to visualize how electrical signals could be used to imitate these beautiful sea creatures who are often able to display an incredible show of lights.
Wassong's ambience skirt mimics the ambience created by the natural environment with lights and sound meant to convey the feeling of stargazing at night
