A recent class-action lawsuit against Church & Dwight has put dry shampoo under scrutiny. The makers of Batiste have agreed to pay out a $2.5 million settlement to anyone who purchased Batiste dry shampoo because of elevated levels of benzene, a chemical that’s known to cause cancer. Last year, a lab in Connecticut found significantly high levels of benzene in dry shampoos from BedHead, Dove, and Tresemme, causing parent company Unilever to pull products from shelves.
